So, here it is.
A little about me: I'm a 24 (soon to be 25) year old guy from the sunny south west of England. A year ago, almost to the day, I was playing my first game of rugby after a lengthy spell out with a neck injury. Eager to make an impression, I was due to go on 20 minutes from the end of the second half to ease myself back into it. So, laces tied, ears taped, deep heat applied and a healthy application of vaseline to my body leaving a silky sheen, I took to the field. Within 5 minutes of playing however I managed to dislocate my knee, lots of pain and profanity ensued (again I send out my deepest apologies to the opposing team physio on hand who calmly asked me to identify which part of my knee hurt, only to have spluttered back at her in an array of colourful language adorned in a west country accent, "where the fudge do you think it hurts!?". I could be forgiven this I hope....ANYWAY, in one sentance: hospital, 3 hours, X-ray, 1 hour, home, 2 weeks later, MRI, 2 weeks later confirmed Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear, 3 months of physio, no improvement, operation.
I had my recontstructive surgery back in January so I'm currently just shy of 9 months post op...which leads me to the purpose of this blog (my first).
Of the 3 months post op I was sat on my backside I got very good at certain things: Playstation, scheduling weekday morning television whilst off work to make it mildly paletable and surfing the various app stores for entertainment. I discovered an app called Couch to 5k (later to discover there are several of these and also an NHS program which is similar). Set over 9 weeks, this little gizmo promises to get me fit....after this amount of time and (rather embarrassingly) a couple of stones heavier, I'm dubious....however always try something once I say.
I will be purchasing some spangly new running shoes in the week and then my crusade shall commence. 3 runs per week, over 9 weeks. First run due in the next week or so. Until then I bid you adue whilst I go to do battle with the evil conglomorate that is DW Sports fitness and haggle me some decent cushions for me pins.
Smiffy out.
